“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” - Winston Churchill
Like any other living organism in the universe, we survive. What does an organism do in order to survive? It consumes. Here’s an example: I am hungry! Let me seek some food. OK, I got the food. I consume it, no more hunger. Churchill summarized survival wonderfully: “We make a living by what we get”.

Whenever you want “it”, you start a journey of seeking how to get “it”. It’s the way people work by default: they survive. You may be asking: So, what’s wrong in surviving? There’s nothing wrong, it’s just that when you’re only surviving, you cannot create anything.
This is where the second part of Churchill’s quote comes into play: “We make a life by what we give”. That is, you cannot create if you don’t give. Keep the duality between consumption versus creation in mind.
Think about this: you want to be powerful, inspiring, self-expressed, courageous, responsible, etc. These ways of being cannot exist in the world of survival. In other words, you cannot “get” them. Why? Because they don’t exist, you create them as mindsets so that you can take actions to produce certain results in your life.
